January News Letter - 1/13/2010

I was looking over some of December’s newsletters and I’m reminded of how fast the weather and markets change...we were talking about the warm weather in the east and cold weather on the west coast = High Markets....Well what about the coldest winter on the east coast and warm on the west coast = Low Markets.  Things sure can change fast.

It is a shame what bad weather can do to the farmers...the unprecedented cold wave that has hit Florida and Texas has been a disaster to some of the farmers there.  All too often bad luck in some areas can cause good luck in other areas.

Well our 1st celery harvest went well.  We started on Jan 5th.  This was earlier that anticipated and sizes were smaller also.  Looks like in the second planting, the size will get bigger.

We hosted a group of German Farmers this week.  They certainly enjoyed the weather and BBQ on a January afternoon.  There was about 25 total German Farmers that attending the tour.  Jack spoke for a few minutes, explaining to them how the produce world works here in the Valley.  The farmers were very interested in the Food Safety.  They wanted to know more about how the problem started, and how the Imperial Valley farmers are making changes, to help assure it doesn’t happen again.

Jack was featured on the CBS Evening News; the story was regarding Food Safety and the LGMA.
Of course, we all felt he did a Terrific Job!
